Step 1 Issuance:  The cards are issued by a merchant or promoter (such as a radio station or other promotion sponsor) to their customer base. The cards can either be generic SBP cards or branded cards containing the merchant or promoter's design. These cards can be programmed to work at all SBP locations or limited to specific merchant sites. Merchants generally charge consumers a small deposit for the cards.

Step 2 Purchase: The merchant establishes various SBP campaigns to generate increased sales and customer retention. These programs can also be part of a co-op campaign that the merchant creates with their existing vendors and distributors. Consumers, once they have the SBP cards purchase promotional items over those from competing firms.

Step 3 Reward:  SBP customers are rewarded for their loyalty and increased purchases though discounts, Smart Bucks and free items just for using their SBP card. Consumers become loyal customers and evangelists for the business. The rewards can be redeemed at the consumer's discretion; either immediately or at some time in the future. This gives the consumer more reason to come back to the store.
